Writer Carlos Sampayo, illustrator José Muñoz
The first work by Argentinians Carlos Sampayo and José Muñoz that I came across was Viet Blues, which was serialised in Crisis and featured their character Alack Sinner. Unfortunately, not all of their comics have been translated into English and the ones that have are hard to find but I recently found a copy of the short story Talkin’ with Joe, published by Fantagraphics in their short-lived series of Sinner translations.

Talkin’ with Joe is essentially a crossover story, featuring both the detective, Sinner and the barman, Joe, from Joe’s Bar, and it also acts as a Sinner origin story so it’s a good place to start. I love the gritty, expressionistic style of Sampayo’s writing and Muñoz’s art, but I’ll write more about their work when I feature one of their longer pieces.
